The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to Mohammed Zakou, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after he was arrested for allegedly disseminating false information about Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Zakou’s arrest stemmed from a Facebook post where he wrote “Rest Well Her Excellency” accompanied by crying emojis, which authorities construed as a premature announcement of the Vice President’s demise, despite official communication indicating she was unwell.

Zakou’s defense team, led by Gary Nimako Marfo, successfully petitioned for bail, which the state did not contest, provided that the bail conditions guaranteed Zakou’s availability for trial.

Consequently, the court granted bail in the amount of GHC 100,000, requiring two sureties.

Zakou is obligated to report to the investigator weekly. The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.

According to the prosecutor from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Zakou acknowledged making the post but maintained it was intended as a gesture of goodwill towards the Vice President.
