The group made the first stop at the Worawora government hospital, where they donated about 20 sets of baby baths, plastic chairs and two dustbins, in the name of the National Women Organizer, after a short ceremony at the assembly hall of the Hospital.

In her address to the Chiefs, hospital staff and women (Mothers) present at the ceremony, Mad. Adzagbo highlighted the government’s commitment towards issues of maternity health and it’s related issues. She spoke highly of the First Lady Rebecca Akuffo-Addo’s malaria and HIV projects, recounting her meritorious support towards women’s reproductive health.

She added that the office of the National Women Organizer thought it wise to celebrate the day in the Volta and Oti regions as a show of appreciation for mothers, especially those with newly born babies in the two regions.

The team moved into the maternity wards of the hospital to hand over the items to the mothers individually and made time to have a feel of the newly born babies.

The Medical Superintendent at the facility, Dr. Secorm, thanked the team and reassured them of the commitment of the hospitals towards maternal health issues. He noted also that, the hospital has seen a surge in patronage from pregnant women, which he says tells a good story about the hospital and most importantly, helpful to the women themselves.

At Hohoe, the group met some Constituency Executives, some elders and the hospital staff to do the donations. The team donated another set of about 50 baby baths, plastic chairs and two dustbins.

In her appreciation speech, Mad. Patricia Azumatse, the nurse’s manager at the Hohoe hospital revealed that maternal death issues have reduced drastically at the facility.

She noted that, in the whole of 2018, the hospital recorded a zero maternal death, dropping from 7 deaths in 2016, 3 deaths in 2017, an achievement she attributed to the commitment of her staff and the highest professional standards of the maternity unit.

“I am happy to inform you that the Hohoe hospital is doing really well when it comes to maternity issues. In 2018, we recorded zero maternal death. Though the story changed this year when we lost a mother during delivery in January, after doing everything humanly possible we pray and hope that it remains like that till the end of the year. Let me also say that the staff here are committed and ready to give out their best to ensure safe delivery and the good health of our clients”, she siad.

She however assured that hospital is working steadily to maintain the records in the subsequent years.

Mad. Azumatse added further that the hospital lacks some facilities, making their work a bit more strenuous. The hospital according to her, has just one operating theatre, which puts the lives of labouring women in danger if there is an ongoing surgery at the theatre.

“Let me also inform you that though we are doing out best, we lack certain amenities that hinder the progress of our work. We hospital has only one theatre and when it becomes necessary we move a pregnant woman into the theatre and there is an ongoing surgery, it endangers the life of the person.”

“In some cases, we refer the persons to the Kpando hospital which is not helpful at all. We are equally understaffed, I am appealing to the government to come to our aid”, she added.

She presented a proposal for a request for the construction of an auxiliary theatre, to the Regional Women Organizer and the team, to be forwarded to the office of the President for consideration.
