A coalition of political parties, spearheaded by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has submitted a petition to Parliament, urging the House to intervene in the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The petition accuses President John Dramani Mahama of orchestrating a calculated attempt to manipulate the judiciary through recent appointments, allegedly paving the way for a third term in office.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, lambasted John Mahama’s actions, warning that the next move would be to appoint an NDC loyalist to chair the Electoral Commission, further eroding the country’s democratic foundations.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the current government has resorted to intimidation to gain an unfair advantage, precipitating a constitutional crisis.

“This is a dangerous coordinated attack on Ghana’s constitutional democracy, and that is why we march today. We march to resist the rise of a new oppressor and an oppressive regime. One who wears the cloth of democracy but governs with the spirit of dictatorship. We march not as partisans but as patriots,” Afenyo-Markin declared.

The NPP leader called on Parliament to stand in solidarity with the political parties in defending the neutrality and values of the constitution within the judiciary, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Receiving the petition, the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, pledged to transmit the document to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for appropriate action, assuring that the House would do its part to ensure justice is upheld.
