The Founding President of IMAN Ghana, Mr. Franklin Cudjoe is cautioning government over its decision to declare August 4 on the nation’s calendar as a public holiday saying it will open the floodgates for possible too many public holiday demands.
[ads1]Mr. Cudjoe was commenting on a statement issued by government on September 17, 2017 stating that it has sent proposal to parliament for a passage of legislation to establish August 4 as Founder’s Day and and September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day of which both days will be observed as a public holiday.
August 4, 1947 was the day the first political party, United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) was formed in the Gold Coast to push for the struggle for independence.
This according to the NPP government, the August 4 should rather be celebrated as founder’s day and but not the day the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was born as the late president John Attah Mills’ NDC government has established.
However, the IMANI Boss is of the view that celebrating a day the first political party was formed and observing it as a national holiday ‘will open the floodgates and others might start asking for public holidays for the birth of branches of political parties’
“Please not another public holiday to celebrate the founding of a political party on August 4, 1947. This will open the floodgates and others might start asking for public holidays for the birth of branches of political parties- of all sorts” – Mr. Cudjoe said
He is also cautioning the government over its announcement that it will spend USD$3million on a drone project to ostensibly fight galamsey (illegal mining).
“why not pilot the idea first and back it up with ground enforcement?” he queried
“Still others like my colleague Bright Simons suggest renting the drones or simplifying deploy mini satellites may be cheaper” – he added
