The Education Ministry says the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo-led New Patriotic Party government has no plans of extending free Senior High School Education to private senior high schools in Ghana.

According to the Ministry, at no point in time has government discussed with Executives of Ghana National Association of Private Schools plans to extend the pro-poor policy to cover students in private senior high schools.

A statement signed by press secretary to the Minister of Education, Rodney Nkrumah- Boateng, rubbished claims that the Ministry met executives of GNAPS to discuss how to extend free SHS to private schools as promised in the National Democratic Congress’ 2020 Manifesto.

“To reiterate, the meeting was not to discuss the facilitation of free shs to private schools as it was suggested on social media platforms, and the general public is hereby invited to completely disregard the opportunistic and desperate attempts to pain a contrary picture,” the statement noted.

While admitting that there was a meeting between the Minister of Education and Executive of GNAPS, the statement explained that the meeting was to discuss relief package for the private SHS on the orders of President Akufo Addo after owners of the schools complained about the impact of covid-19.

The statement also rebuffed claims that the meeting was held after the NDC’s manifesto launch, stating that the meeting was before the biggest opposition Party outdoored it’s manifesto.

The Ministry’s statement was in response to social media trolls that the Education Ministry met executives of GNAPS to implement portions of the NDC’s manifesto.

Speaking at the NDC’s manifesto launch, flag bearer of the umbrella Party, John Dramani Mahama read portions of the policy document which states that the Party will extend free SHS to private schools when elected into government.
