The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, has asserted that the Commission can’t be biased towards the Labour Unions due to its composition.
He noted that though there is mistrust between the Labour Unions and government, the commission cannot be biased against, either the government or the unions.
He said “there is a high level of mistrust between Labour Unions and government,” adding, “The composition of the NLC makes it nearly impossible to be biased towards any party.”
Mr. Ofosu Asamoah explained that the NLC is only executing its mandate hence not siding with government. He said the requirement that Labour Union notify the Commission a week before taking any strike action is a move to side with government. Mr. Asamoah noted that the law mandates the unions to write to their employers and give notice to the NLC for a period of not less than seven days.
Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Hot Issues, on Sunday, April 21, he said “The law does not provide for strikes to be declared through press conferences. Strikes are legal but the law says you have to write to your employer and give notice to the NLC for a period of not less than seven days.”
