Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has called on Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to resign. He accuses him of breaking a clear promise regarding the use of private jets for presidential travel.
This follows reports that Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang returned to Ghana on a chartered jet. The incident has sparked criticism, especially since Ablakwa had previously condemned such travel arrangements.
Speaking on Top Story on Joy News, Nitiwul recalled that while in opposition, Ablakwa consistently opposed the use of private jets. He also pledged to step down if his government ever continued the practice.
“Nobody forced him to make that promise,” Nitiwul said. “He didn’t say it would depend on the situation. He was direct: if a private jet was rented, he’d resign.”
Nitiwul believes the current situation calls for Ablakwa to honor his word. “If I were him, I would step down without waiting for a directive from the President. He claimed to be a man of principle; now is the time to prove it.”
He also dismissed any attempts to justify the use of a private jet based on changed circumstances. “Trying to explain this away won’t convince anyone. The promise was unconditional.”
According to Nitiwul, Ghanaians are watching closely and will judge Ablakwa based on whether he keeps his word.
