The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday named Finidi George as their new head coach following the exit of Jose Peseiro.
George, who is been serving as the head coach of Nigerian top-flight side Enyimba since September 2021 was also a member of Peseiro’s coaching staff. He assumed interim charge against Ghana and Mali in March.
Peseiro’s successor’s coaching tenure will start with Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin in June. He is expected to ensure Nigeria makes it to the next edition of the 2025 AFCON, to be held in Morocco. Also, Finidi will need to ensure the team does not miss out on another World Cup qualification for their absence in Qatar in 2022.
George Finidi has a high line to scale following the team’s success in Africa in the last AFCON. After failing to claim the trophy in Ivory, the beaten finalists would want to go a step further in Morocco.
George as a player played a role in Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON victory. He also chalked success with Ajax, winning the Eredivisie title and the Champions League in 1995.
