Field workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA), of Ghana, have threatened to lay down their tools in the ongoing Ghana card mop-up registration over half salary paid to them amidst COVID-19, Awake News has learned.
According to the aggrieved field workers, they accepted to return to the field for the mop-up registration exercise even though the authority has refused to recognize them as frontline workers for putting their lives at risk of contracting Coronavirus.
The angry workers revealed that disappointments only heightened when they woke up to a text message on July 7, 2020, showing that they’re being paid half salary instead of the full amount.
“… It is either they pay our salaries in full or we will stop the mop-up. In this coronavirus era, we are still working and at the end of the month, you pay us half salary instead of the full amount. First, You failed to recognize us frontline workers and we didn’t even complain. Now, you paying us half salary in this Coranavirus time. We are putting our lives and that of our families at risk of this COVIS-19 and yet what do we get?”
Arguably, the field workers comprising of MRWO, CVO, CFO have every right to demonstrate against this broad day cheat especially risking their lives in this COVID-19 era.
Meanwhile, Professor Kenneth Attafuah, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority is always on the radio in Accra talking when his staff are stranded on the field.
The National Identification Authority began the nationwide mop-up registration exercise for the Ghana card Thursday, June 18, 2020, in the Upper East, Upper West and Eastern Regions of Ghana.
The mop-up registration exercise has started in Western, Western North, and Central Regions over the weekend.
Whereas, the mop-up train is expected to start off in the Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions on Friday, June 10, 2020.
The Ghana card mop-up registration exercise according to the authority is to give some Ghanaians who could not go through the first mass registration an opportunity to do so now.
