The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, has added his voice to the long-standing debate of renaming the Kotoka International Airport.
General Mosquito believes that the airport’s name should be changed, citing that General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka played no role in its construction.
In an interview with Radio Gold, the NDC chairman recounted the history of the airport, emphasizing that it was originally named Accra International Airport after its development project was launched by President Kwame Nkrumah in 1956.
The airport was later renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969, in honour of General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a member of the National Liberation Council.
General Mosquito argued that Kotoka’s role in overthrowing Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and renaming the airport after himself is not a legacy worth celebrating.
“Kotoka did a coup and changed Kwame Nkrumah and named the airport after himself. That is not right. Kwame Nkrumah did all the work, and Kotoka came to take the glory after the coup,” he stated.
This is not the first time the issue of renaming the airport has been raised.
Over the years, several individuals and groups have called for a name change, citing Kotoka’s controversial legacy.
However, despite these calls, the airport’s name has remained unchanged.
General Mosquito’s comments have sparked a renewed debate on the issue, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to share their opinions.
While some agree with General Mosquito’s stance, others argue that the name change is unnecessary and would be a waste of resources.
