The decision of the speaker comes at the back of some three incumbent members of parliament filling to contest their seat as an independent candidates and one MP crossing carpet from his independent status in parliament to file on the ticket of the ruling NPP to contest the 2024 parliamentary election.

These four MPs include Cynthia Mamle Morrison NPP MP for Agona West; Kwadjo Asante for Suhum both NPP MPs who have both filed with the Electoral Commission to contest the next parliamentary election as independent candidates.

Andrew Amoako Asiamah, MP for Fomena who was expelled from New Patriotic Party in 2020 but went ahead and won the election as an independent candidate has now returned to contest on the ticket of his former party, the  NPP.

The fourth member is Peter Kwakye-Ackah lawmaker for Amenfi Central who came into the house on the ticket of National Democratic Congress (NDC) but has now filed to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

With the NDC now having majority of 136 members against NPP 135, the opposition NDC will have the mandate to appoint the first deputy speaker as Andrew Amoako Asiamah, MP for Fomena is not out of Parliament.
