The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has endorsed all female aspirants ahead of the August 24, 2019 Parliamentary Primaries election.
Mr. Nketia in a video sighted by Awake News, urging delegates to consider voting for female aspirants adding that as the Vice President of Socialists International, he feels ashamed to see countries like Rwanda, Uganda with high number of females representation in Parliament yet his home country, Ghana, having lesser females in parliament.
Mr. Nketia made this call when MP for Klottey-Korley Constituency and Primaries aspirant, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and some of her colleagues paid a curtsy call on him.
According to him, “I wish there could have been a better way of ensuring we [the nation] can bring up more women in parliament but the constrains of our constitution makes it very difficult to be able to improve the situation”.
For him, they in the NDC can only appeal delegates to consider given their support to women.
Political parties in Ghana have been doing their part to encourage more women in leadership position.
The NDC in it announcement for the 2020 Parliamentary primaries pegged filing of nominations forms at Twenty Five thousand Ghana cedis (Ghc 25,000.00) for male aspirants whiles women and people living with disability would pay only twelve thousand five hundred Ghana cedis (Ghc 12,500.00).
The NPP on the other hand pegged their fee at GHS25,000 for men with “discount of 50 per cent will be given to persons with disabilities, female candidates and the youth below 40 years.”
