The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has called for the resignation or removal of Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine, citing alleged underperformance and constitutional breaches.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Nana B referred to Article 88 of Ghana’s Constitution, stressing that the Attorney General has a vital mandate as the principal legal advisor to the government. He emphasized that the role carries significant responsibilities, including the initiation and conduct of criminal and civil prosecutions on behalf of the state.
Quoting directly from the Constitution, Nana B stated, “The Attorney General shall be responsible for the initiation and conduct of all prosecutions of criminal offenses. All offenses prosecuted in the name of the Republic of Ghana shall be the suit of the Attorney General.”
He further explained that the Attorney General must not only lead in criminal prosecutions but also represent the state in civil matters and maintain the right of audience in all courts across the country. According to him, this underscores the gravity and scope of the Attorney General’s duties within Ghana’s legal framework.
Despite these constitutional expectations, Nana B argued that Dr. Ayine has failed to deliver on his mandate effectively. He cited growing public criticism, inefficiencies in the justice delivery system, and allegations of corruption as justifications for his call.
The statement comes in the wake of earlier comments by Gomoa Central MP and social commentator Kwame A-Plus, who had publicly accused Dr. Ayine of being corrupt.
Nana B insists that in order to preserve public trust in Ghana’s legal system, there must be decisive action either through the Attorney General’s resignation or removal from office.
