President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named Nalerigu as the capital of the North East Region.
The President announced this when he presented the Constitutional Instruments [CI 116] to give effect to the newly created region at the Jubilee House in Accra.
Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed has also been named the care-taker Minister of the North East Region until a Minister is appointed.
The North East Region was carved out of the existing Northern Region in December 2018 after a referendum.
According to the President, the creation of the six regions was in fulfillment of the NPP’s campaign promise in 2016.
He said the North East region is the food basket of northern Ghana, thus the need to facilitate its development.
He reiterated that a seed money of 120 million Ghana cedis has been allocated to each of the six new regions as stated in the 2019 Budget and Economic Policy for their smooth take off.
“I want to assure residents of the region however that government projects and structures will be equitably spread across the region. Let us work hard together and I’m confident that with dedication and commitment, the North East Region will develop and touch the lives of every resident and help us to build the great nation of Ghana we all desire,” President Akufo-Addo said.
President Akufo-Addo will present the CI to give effect to the remaining 5 new regions in the coming days.
