MTN Ghana has confirmed that approximately 5,700 customers may have been affected by a recent data breach.
The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched an investigation into the incident, which involves unauthorized access to the personal information of MTN users.
In a statement issued on Monday, MTN said it is working with top cybersecurity experts to conduct a forensic investigation and determine the extent of the breach.
“We are prioritizing the privacy of our customers and the integrity of our systems,” the company stated. “All affected customers will be contacted directly.”
MTN stressed that the investigation is ongoing but reassured the public that all necessary resources have been deployed to resolve the matter promptly.
To protect users, MTN advised customers to remain alert and take the following precautions:
- Place a fraud alert on your credit report.
- Keep MTN, MoMo, and banking apps up to date.
- Use strong, unique passwords and change them regularly.
- Be wary of unexpected messages and avoid clicking suspicious links.
- Never share passwords, PINs, or OTPs via phone, text, or email.
The telecom giant reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding customer data and pledged to manage the situation with transparency and urgency.
