ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY MR. AGBONI NICHOLAS KELVIN (NATIONAL PRESIDENT) ON BEHALF OF THE 2017/2018 ADMINISTRATION DURING A HANDING OVER CEREMONY ON FRIDAY, 29TH DECEMBER, 2017 AT DELA/EYRAM BEACH ADIDOME, CENTRAL TONGU

Senco Homes

Mr Chairman, the District Chief Executives Presents, the Chief Patron, Headmasters/Headmistresses, Ex-officials Present, Outgoing National and Chapter Executives, Associates, Observers, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am indeed honored to be here today to accept the baton of leadership from Adukpo Alex Kofi led administration on behalf of my noble officers to frontier and spearhead the affairs of all Tongu Students within the country and abroad.

‘if a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep the street so that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say that here lived a great sweeper who did his job well’ (Martin Luther).

Mr. Chairman, It is said that, honor must be given to whom it is due. On this note, I first and foremost express our profound gratitude to the Almighty God for the successful elections conducted for us on11th August, 2017. I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate the leadership of the 2016/2017 for their hard work in projecting the image of the Union far. To the Chief Patron, Mr. Abotsi E. Confidence, words cannot express your efforts by keeping this union moving forward. Our sincerest appreciation goes to you. Your rewards are in heaven awaiting you.

The plight of the constituents and the struggle of the Tongu students to progress in education and better conditions of living etc. made us offer ourselves to represent them for betterment.

Mr. Chairman, to strengthen all Tongu students front, I receive the sword of office on behalf of my executives with moving determination and a majestic scorn to establish a reign of freedom and a rule of justice.

We are ready to take NUTSA and lead the entire Tongu Students and Associates across River Jordan so that we can reach the Land of Canaan in order to promote and project the aims and objectives of the Union. There is nothing we cannot do in unity, togetherness and determination. But we can only deliver on our vision and mission statements to the expectations of our members through the support of all of you.

The success and progress of NUTSA do not depend on one person, it is a collaborative effort. I respectfully call on you all to support us in the discharge of our duties.

Mr. Chairman, I am mindful of debilitating and grinding poverty that afflict the Union, the entire leadership and its members to the lowest rung of the economic ladder going long way affecting the sole beneficiaries from Tongu Land. But all are not yet over. We can still make a change. After contemplating, I concluded that this baton which I received on behalf of my members is a powerful recognition that possibilities are the answers to the crucial impossibilities, a progress of our time.

He who seeks success for others went far to pave way for him/herself to soar higher. ‘If you want to move fast, move alone but if you want to move far then move with others or move with multitudes’ (unanimous)

Mr. Chairman, gone were the days when the Tongu Land was popularly acclaimed to be doyen of academic excellence. One thing any indigence from Tongu could confidently hit his or her chest and be proud of was the high level of academic excellence and leadership qualities; these are attested to by people outside our locality. It is preposterous and highly incredible to fathom that, the powerful Tongu Land in terms of education is now struggling and we are all witnesses to that.

‘Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work and the only way to do great work is to love what you do’ (Steve Jobs).

NUTSA 2017/2018 EDUCATIONAL AND HEALTH PROGRAMMES

Educational support.

We wish to extend our educational support to all Senior High Schools and the Basic Schools in the three Tongu Districts (Central, North and South Tongu). This will be in the form of;

a. Organization of quizzes and debates competitions among the schools to prepare them for the National Mathematics and Science quiz competitions.
Voluntary teaching at the Basic Schools and the Senior High Schools in the Districts.

b. Financial support to brilliant but needy students in the Districts.
Presentation of gifts and awards to some outstanding/ brilliants students in the Districts to motivate them to learn.

c. Presentation of gifts and awards to some hardworking teachers in the Districts to motivate them.

d. Organization of educational seminars to eradicate school dropouts among others.

e. Donating textbooks/ course books to the schools’ libraries in the Districts.

Health support.

We also want to organize our members and associates to support the hospitals in the three Tongu Districts through;

a. Free/Voluntary blood donations

b. Liaising with the hospitals to educate the youths on a few health hazards, teenage pregnancy among many.

If these are to be achieved, one must evolve from all human conflicts a method which rejects revenge, aggression, retaliation, division and exhibit the attitude of togetherness, giving, sacrifice, dedication etc towards the Union.

Our predecessors in their small ways and the earlier supports from benevolent, the union was able to embarked on its yearly educational support in the following schools; Mafi Kumasi Senior High School, Battor Senior High School, Comboni Senior High School, Mepe St. Kizito Senior High School, Dorfo Senior High School, Aveyime Battor Senior School and Adidome Senior High School. We pledge to continue from where they have ended.

In other to sustain and continue these projects, we would need your fullest support as you are currently doing in the Districts and beyond.

Mr. Chairman, ‘I refuse to accept despairs as the final response to the ambiguities of history, I refuse to accept the idea that, the ‘isness’ of man’s present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal ‘oughtness’ that forever confronts him’ I believe that, unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. I believe that, even amid today’s motor bursts and whining bullets’ there’s still hope for a brighter tomorrow for NUTSA. For humans, it is impossible but in him (Almighty God) is possible and done.

It is now time to adopt consultative engagement, co-operation and collaboration in our
routine activities to address the needs of the Union and its members.

Mr. Chairman, aside the major aims and objectives of the Union, the following are a few things my administration would bring into being;

1. Membership card
2. Review and amend the existing constitution to meet the light of the day
3. Establishment of welfare
4. Members would be awarded certificates and citations after their tenure of office as a sign of hard work.
5. Extension of the union to all tertiary institutions where our members are.

God bless us all.
Long Live NUTSA
Long Live Tongu
Long Live Volta

God bless our homeland Ghana; and make our nation great and strong.

Thank you.
