The mother of Joana Yabane, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) final-year student allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, Daniel Tuffour, was overcome with emotion as she attended the court hearing on Monday, March 17, 2025.
The Prempeh District court had slated the hearing of the case for the day, and the mother, accompanied by other family members, was present to see justice served.
As the court proceedings unfolded, the mother’s grief became too much to bear, and she was captured on camera, weeping bitterly.
The heartbreaking scene has since gone viral on social media platforms, with many Ghanaians empathizing with her pain.
The case against Daniel Tuffour, the prime suspect in Joana’s murder, has been adjourned to April 1, 2025, as investigations continue.
According to sources, the docket has been submitted to the Attorney-General’s office for advice.
Joana’s tragic death occurred in February 2025, behind the Central Laboratory on KNUST’s campus.
The crime scene investigation led to Daniel’s arrest, and he has been in custody since.
The KNUST community has been shaken by the incident, with many students and faculty members calling for justice for Joana and her family.
According to reports, Daniel and Joana had a troubled relationship, with the duo having visited the KNUST counselling center multiple times.
Despite their issues, Daniel was said to be obsessed with Joana, and her family had reportedly asked them to separate.
In the days leading up to Joana’s death, she had reported her phone stolen to KNUST security, and there were allegations of domestic violence.
A friend of Joana’s revealed that she had confided in her about Daniel’s abusive behaviour, stating that he had slapped her twice.
On the night of Joana’s death, the couple had been studying at the Biological Sciences library, and an argument ensued as they walked back to their hostel.
Daniel allegedly pushed Joana to the ground, using his knee to strangle her.
After realizing what he had done, Daniel shook Joana’s lifeless body and then hid her laptop behind a hostel.
The next morning, Daniel wrote his exams, wearing the same shirt he had worn during the alleged murder. CCTV footage later revealed Daniel’s involvement in Joana’s death, leading to his arrest.
