The Executive Director of the Institute of Local Government, Dr. Oduro Osai has reiterated the need for MMDCES to be elected if real democracy is to be practiced.

He said unlike in 1988 when the Local Governance Act was formulated [ads1]and such needs could not be advocated because of the military rule, there would be no reason for them not to be elected.

Dr. Osai made the point in Wa at a Sensitization and Awareness Raising Workshop on the Election of MMDCES.

The Local Governance expert did not also think it is fair for a president who is elected and chairs a security council to appoint another to chair a District Security Council at the District level.

On her part, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama gave the disparity between the National and District Assembly Elections indicating between a 75-85% and 30-40% turnout respectively.

And in order to ensure local people participate in local governance by achieving an impressive turnout as in National elections, the MMDCES must be elected.
