The Minority Caucus in Parliament has raised a red flag over what they described as a plot by some members in government to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to pave the way for the appointment of a judge perceived to be sympathetic to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to the minority caucus, the move would undermine the independence of the judiciary and compromise the integrity of the legal system.
Addressing a press conference, Suame MP John Darko vehemently opposed the petitions seeking the Chief Justice’s removal, describing them as unfounded and constitutionally flawed.
He cautioned the judge in question against rising to power on the back of Justice Torkornoo’s exit, warning that posterity would not look kindly upon such actions.
The Minority Caucus is urging traditional and religious leaders to intervene and advise the President against pursuing this course of action, which they believe would have far-reaching consequences for the country’s judicial system.
This development comes on the heels of the Supreme Court’s adjournment of an injunction application seeking to halt the President and Council of State from proceeding with a prima facie determination on the petitions calling for the Chief Justice’s removal.
