The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has issued a scathing statement condemning the Mahama government’s alleged misuse of state institutions to persecute and intimidate members of the previous government and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the Minority Caucus, the Mahama government has chosen to prioritize political witch-hunts over delivering on its electoral promises.
The government had promised to “reset” the economy, alleviate the cost-of-living crisis, create sustainable jobs, and invest in modernizing the nation’s infrastructure, among other things.
However, the Minority Caucus claims that the government has failed to deliver on these promises and is instead using state institutions to target political opponents.
The Minority statement also took issue with comments made by President Mahama, who accused the Akufo-Addo government of “criminally mismanaging” Ghana’s economy.
The Minority sees this as an attempt to set the stage for state-sponsored persecution of opponents.
The statement emphasized that the Minority Caucus upholds accountability but condemns the abuse of power and persecution, which undermines democratic principles.
The Caucus called on the government to focus on delivering its promises rather than engaging in political witch-hunts.
This development is the latest in a series of allegations of abuse of power and persecution by the Mahama government.
The opposition NPP has been vocal in its criticism of the government’s handling of the economy and its alleged attempts to silence opponents.
