In a compassionate gesture aimed at alleviating the plight of victims of the recent Adum PZ fire outbreak, the Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, donated GH¢200,000 to affected traders and residents.
The donation was made during a solidarity visit to the disaster site in Kumasi on Monday, April 14, 2025.
The fire, which tore through the bustling Adum PZ commercial enclave in Kumasi two weeks ago, destroyed several shops, goods, and properties, leaving many traders devastated and without livelihoods.
The inferno, believed to have been triggered by an electrical fault, sparked widespread concern and drew national attention, with both government and private organizations pledging support.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, addressing the victims during the visit, expressed heartfelt sympathy on behalf of the Minority Caucus and reaffirmed their commitment to standing with the affected individuals during this challenging period.
He noted that the GH¢200,000 donation was mobilized through internal contributions by members of the Minority in Parliament as an immediate intervention to support the victims’ recovery efforts.
“This is not just a token; it is a message that we are with you,” Afenyo-Markin said.
“The Minority Caucus stands in solidarity with every victim. We understand the pain, the loss, and the uncertainty you face, and we are working on securing further assistance,” he added.
He revealed that discussions are ongoing within the caucus to raise additional funds for long-term support, including the possible reconstruction of damaged stalls and provision of relief items to affected families.
The visit by the Minority follows their earlier announcement indicating their intention to take time from their legislative responsibilities to engage directly with victims of the fire.
Their presence was met with appreciation by the victims, many of whom continue to struggle aftermath of the tragic incident.
The gesture also comes amidst broader calls for improved fire safety infrastructure and proactive regulatory oversight in densely populated market areas across the country.
As the situation continues to unfold, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) are collaborating with stakeholders to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
