Muheeb Saeed, a dedicated journalist and advocate for press freedom, passed away on March 30, 2025, at the International Maritime Hospital in Tema, Ghana.
He has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
His death followed a sudden illness earlier in the week, which led to his hospitalization and subsequent stay in intensive care.
Despite extensive medical intervention, Saeed, who was 39 years old, could not survive the complications.
Saeed’s passing is a significant loss to the media landscape in West Africa, particularly for the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), where he worked tirelessly in his role.
Known for his steadfast commitment to independent journalism, Saeed was deeply involved in initiatives that championed press freedom, freedom of expression, and the protection of journalists across the region.
Before his untimely death, Saeed had been actively involved in numerous programs aimed at improving the safety and working conditions of journalists.
His efforts contributed significantly to various MFWA campaigns focused on media rights and the enhancement of democratic processes in West Africa.
His dedication to his work was evident in his passion for educating young journalists and his tireless pursuit of truth and transparency in the media.
In a statement released by the MFWA, the organization expressed its sorrow over the loss of a colleague who had become a vital part of their team.
“Muheeb’s contributions to independent journalism and the fight for press freedom will never be forgotten,” said the foundation, adding that he will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his work and his exceptional character.
Muheeb leaves behind two wives and five children, who are receiving condolences from the MFWA and the wider media community.
His passing has been met with an outpouring of grief, with colleagues and fellow journalists across the region honoring his memory and celebrating his lifelong commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights of journalists and the public.
The MFWA and other organizations in the region are planning tributes to honour Saeed’s work, ensuring his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of journalists in West Africa.
