Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, has announced plans to invest in Ghana’s creative industry.
Speaking in an interview on BTM Afrika with NY DJ, the successful entrepreneur, who has investments in sectors such as aviation and logistics, explained that his interest in the creative space stems from the incredible pool of talent in the industry.
“I can tell you that Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are some of the most talented artists in Africa,” McKorley said. “None of these Nigerian artists comes close to them, although they are also talented. Their music and stage performances are amazing.”
He praised Ghanaian creatives for their hard work and potential but highlighted that many face challenges due to limited funding and lack of proper investment.
McDan sees great potential in the creative sector, not just in talent but also in terms of financial returns.
“That space brings a lot of money, and I smile where there’s good money,” he said. “It’s not my direct space, so I would rather support others financially and otherwise to grow in it. You can’t be everywhere, and if you’re living in the system, you have to give others a shoulder.”
He urged other business leaders to support creatives, stressing that they serve as ambassadors for Ghana on the global stage.
“I believe creatives need strong support from businessmen. They are our ambassadors, and I feel we need to invest more in them. Even though I’m not in the space, I can see some great young talent emerging.”
In 2022, McKorley awarded a $2 million contract to Ghanaian creative George Quaye, recognizing his dedication and talent. The announcement was made during the McDan Youth Connect event at KNUST in Kumasi.
Using Quaye as an example, McKorley encouraged young people to believe in their potential and take gradual steps toward success.
Quaye, known for his role in the TV series Taxi Driver, is now active in theatre and leads the ImageBureau team, staging multiple plays with actress and broadcaster Naa Ashorkor to boost theatre in Ghana.
