President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning against the illegal construction of buildings on waterways, wetlands, and Ramsar sites, emphasizing that such actions are contributing to devastating flooding and property destruction.

Speaking at the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at Black Star Square, he condemned the reckless disregard for environmental laws, which puts lives and properties at risk, especially as the rainy season approaches.

Mahama pointed out that illegal buildings obstructing rivers have nowhere to drain, resulting in floods. He also highlighted concerns over the involvement of some chiefs in selling Ramsar sites for development, urging that this malpractice must stop.

To address these issues, Mahama announced that any illegal structures found blocking waterways would be demolished, and warned that the law would be strictly enforced.

He stressed that those responsible for such violations would face serious consequences to protect the safety and well-being of the public.
