After successfully electing a flagbearer to lead the party into the 2020 general polls, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has another equally important decision to make which is crucial to the party’s successes in the upcoming national elections.

The NDC is required to select a competitive person to become the running mate to the flagbearer elect, John Dramani Mahama.

Ex-president Mahama was re-elected flagbearer of the NDC last Saturday, February 23, 2019 after a keen contest in which he garnered a total of 95.24 per cent of valid votes cast leaving less than 5 per cent for his other six contenders to share.

Some political analysts have advised that the NDC goes for a female as the Vice Presidential candidate and in doing so, the region of selection must also be highly considered.

Dr Amakye Boateng, a Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), explained that the choice and region are strategic for the party to regain the one million votes it lost in the 2016 general elections.

He said, “A female choice of Vice President would make the NDC more attractive and appealing to more women, especially now that the party looks more united after their last Saturday’s presidential primaries.”

Awake News is, however, gathering information on social media that flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama may settle on Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as his running mate for the 2020 general election.

Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who is the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, is the eldest daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

It was alleged last year ahead of the Presidential Primaries that the Klottey Korle lawmaker is being considered as running mate if Mahama wins the flagbearer bid.

Responding to this in an earlier interview, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings refused to confirm the reports but said she was willing to support the NDC in whatever capacity to regain power in 2020.

The campaign team of former President Mahama also denied the speculations.

The team in a statement dated October 7, 2018 signed by the spokesperson, James Agyenim-Boateng asked the general public to disregard the “false” reports as “Mr. Mahama is presently focused on both his NDC flagbearer campaign and his official duties,” the campaign team stated”.

Zanetor congratulates Mahama

Dr Agyeman-Rawlings has congratulated John Mahama for his “resounding victory” at the presidential primaries of the NDC and also commended all the other candidates for helping to entrench the democratic process within the party.

“Now it is time to work together for victory in the 2020 general elections. #TogetherWeBuild #Victory2020,” she said, in her congratulatory message.
