Former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has clarified his position in response to rumours that he may serve as former President John Mahama’s running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the former chief of staff expressed gratitude for the recognition and support he has received from numerous interest groups and individuals who have mentioned his name in connection with the running mate position.
He made it clear, however, that he disagrees with these beliefs and has no desire to fill such a position in the party at the time of writing the press release.
Mr. Debrah emphasised that he has not expressed a desire to be a running mate, but he accepts that people may be motivated by a genuine belief in his credentials.
He stressed his close collaboration with former President Mahama, as well as his understanding of the President’s decision-making process.
“I have worked with President Mahama and remain his close confidante.” I’ve worked with him long enough to know that he makes the right decisions at the right time. “He is not the type of person who would be lobbied for such a position,” Mr. Debrah explained.
He went on to outline President Mahama’s current priorities, highlighting the importance of ongoing engagement with key party bodies such as the FEC (Functional Executive Committee) and COE (Council of Elders) to fill critical party positions.
President Mahama’s emphasis on fund-raising and support for the proposed elections and IT directorates has also been underscored by the former Chief of Staff.
Mr. Debrah expressed gratitude for the well-intended sentiments expressed by many organisations, but asked that President Mahama be given the space and peace of mind to make his own decision about the selection of a running mate when he believes it is appropriate.
