Improving economic outcomes for African countries starts by ensuring that those who engage on behalf of these countries have a mindset that values what Africa produces. A mindset of deserved prosperity and not grateful poverty.

When countries provide a good or service that the world uses that country becomes wealthy. Oil in Norway, electronics in South Korea……the list goes on.

It is true everywhere except in Africa. We must take the time to understand why to create new outcomes.

African countries have provided global goods and services for generations yet remain poor.

Gold, against which internationally strong currencies are pegged, is extracted in large quantities on the continent yet the countries that produce it are poor. The current Digital Information Age is powered by devices run on Coltan, yet the largest producing country remains poor. Shea butter is the biggest rave in the beauty industry today yet the producer-countries are still poor. Don’t you ever ask why?

Long before globalisation was a buzzword Africa was globalised – hundreds of years ago – to support the world. Yet, African people never see the true benefits because their contributions remain undervalued and underpriced in exchange for kind charity.

Focusing on alleviating poverty will not develop the continent. We must focus on prosperity and place greater value on what the continent produces starting with the people on the continent themselves valuing their goods and services.
