Low standard of education in Oti Region; stakeholders call for support

The Afram Plains Organization and United Purpose in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and some selected community leaders, this week held a two day sensitization programme in both Krachi East Municipality and Krachi Nchumuru District to elaborate on the continues falling of educational standard in the region.

The workshop was also possibly develop an action plan to help promote quality education.

According to a research conducted by using score cards, the performance of the students were not encouraging due to some challenges which includes; lack of fund from the various Assemblies to provide infrastructure, computer laboratories, accommodation for teachers closer to schools especially those on the inter – lands, TLM among others.

Mr Samuel Sawson Lartey, the head of supervision from the Ghana Education service in Krachi East revealed that out of the 89 schools in the municipality, there is no single computer laboratory to assist the pupils in the field of ICT and availability of Teaching and Learning materials TLM is a problem.

He also requested that there should be adequate infrastructure especially KG blocks because most of them sit on bear flow while learning. These among others according to him affecting the performance of the students and appealed to the Municipal Assembly to come to their aid.

During the engagement in the Krachi Nchumuru district, the education director Mr Kwame Benjamin lamented bitterly about lack of teaching staff in the schools, he said in some schools, one teacher teaches from the KG to class six this is because some teachers who comes to district spend less than two years before you realize they’ve already applied for realise to other areas.

“They say the place is not attractive to them due to lack of proper accommodation and if you want to force them to stay, then their attitudes to work would change”.

He suggested that there should be some motivation like teachers awards in other to keep them in the district for longer period.

Some participants share their view with the media by expressing an appreciation to the NGO’s for enlighten then about their responsibilities as parents to support their children in school to become good leaders in future by providing them with school uniforms, learning materials, food and other things.

Mr M.Y. Modoc the country director of Afram Plains Development Organization APDO and Madam Juliet Lampo who is also the the country director of United Purpose used the opportunity to advice parents to prioritize their wards education and should not always depend on the government for developmental projects in their communities. To the various Assemblies, quality education is something they should seek for by providing necessary needs and opportunity to promote it in their jurisdictions.

They therefore, gave an assurance that, base on score cards indications received from GES, the communities and the Assemblies and the action plans, they would engage in consultation with the various stakeholders so that the necessary action plans can be featured into their development plan and budget.
