A non-governmental organization, Messengers of Peace (MOP) Liberia, has won President George Manneh Weah’s inaugural National Peace Prize for their invaluable contributions to peace in Liberia.

Presenting the Peace Prize last Saturday at the celebration of the 15 years of peace festival and the official launch of the Weah Peace Prize [ads1]organized by Liberia Crusaders for Peace, President Weah congratulated the Messengers of Peace for being one of the non-governmental Organizations that is engaging young people to ensure there is unbroken peace in the country.

The Peace Prize, which initial cash prize was L$250,000 was later augmented to L$1 million by President Weah stating that it was his contribution to the winner of this year’s Weah Peace prize.

The President presented the Prize to Messengers of Peace at the ceremony which marks the official launching of Weah’s Peace Prize held in Buchana, Grand Bassa County.

At the same time, Liberia’s Cultural Ambassador Juli Endee, who is the brain behind the launching of the Weah Peace Prize, told Journalists that the launching of the Peace Prize in honor of President Weah is meant to award those who are directly involved in promoting peace through the work they do. “President Weah has worked tirelessly and contributed to the very peace all Liberians enjoy today so I launch this prize to encourage others to work harder in maintaining the peace.

The Cultural Ambassador further explained that the Weah Peace Prize ceremony will be observed every year in Liberia and hopes to give more prizes to those who are working and deserve the peace Prize.

She lauded Mr. George Haddad of the Haddad Group of Companies for his contribution of LD$250,000 for the winner of the prize which, according to her, was augmented to a total of L$1 Million by President Weah.

Receiving the Peace Prize, Ms. Raphaelyn Bomosy, representing the Executive Director of Messengers of Peace Ms. Gwendolyn Myers, appreciated President Weah and Amb. Endee for awarding the organization with such honor.

She explained that MOP is a Non-Governmental youth organization, which focuses on empowering young people to be peace ambassadors as efforts to ensure that Liberia maintains the peace.

The organization, she explained, originated from Community Outreach of the Public Information Office of the erstwhile United Nations in Liberia since September 17, 2008.

She called on her fellow young Liberians to work with MOP-Liberia by preaching peace which she believes will make Liberia a great nation.

Meanwhile, MOP-Liberia’s vision is to become one of the great Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) movements in Liberia and the sub-region, which stands for key peace values and is not afraid or reluctant to stand up for peace and non-violence. MOP-Liberia is a conscientious objector to any form of violence anywhere in the world. MOP-Liberia remains committed to the key peace values of hard work, building trust, honesty, tolerance, and respect for human dignity and diversity.

MOP’s mission is to inculcate its shared values with young people in the various peace clubs (in schools and communities) spread across the country. It is their expectation that young people who benefit from MOP-Liberia’s programmes and inculcated values would be great examples of the dedication and commitment that MOP-Liberia stands for.
