As Ghana struggles with these issues, it begs the question: Did everyone get it wrong from the start? For more than a year Ghana has been embroiled in heated debates over the proposed anti-LGBTQ law. Despite the existence of LGBTQ individuals within the society, their presence remained largely invisible, hidden behind a veil of privacy. So, what started the sudden push for legislation and why has the international community taken such a keen interest?

The emergence of Ghana’s LGBTQ bill did not come out of thin air. Instead it found roots in the longstanding to openly acknowledge LGBTQ identities. For years individuals who identified as LGBTQ navigated Ghana’s cultural landscape in silence, concealing their true selves from public scrutiny. However as a global conversation around the LGBTQ rights gained attention, the once muted community started to become visible. The roots of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ bill can be traced back to a long standing cultural silence surrounding LGBTQ identities.

The catalyst for the proposed legislation remains a subject of debate. Some argue that it stems from a genuine concern for traditional values and moral standards, while others see it as a reactionary response to increase visibility and advocacy efforts of the LGBTQ community. Regardless of its motives, the bill has become a lightning rod for controversy, sparking impassioned debates both domestically and abroad.
One of the central questions surrounding the bill is why now? With LGBTQ individuals existing within Ghanaian society for years without legislative intervention, what prompted the sudden need for such measures? Some argue that external influences, including pressure from conservative groups and religious organizations, have played a significant role in shaping the narrative surrounding LGBTQ rights in Ghana.

However, as the international community closely monitors Ghana’s legislative developments, scrutiny has intensified. Critics argue that the proposed bill not only violates fundamental human rights but also perpetuates discrimination and intolerance. The scrutiny has raised broader questions about the role of international pressure in shaping domestic policy and implications for sovereignty and self-determination. In hindsight, it is evident that misconceptions and missteps have plagued the discourse surrounding LGBTQ rights in Ghana.

The failure to acknowledge the existence and rights of LGBTQ individuals within Ghanaian society has perpetuated a culture of silence and marginalization. Additionally, one might opinion that the framing of LGBTQ rights as a threat to traditional values has further polarized public opinion and hindered meaningful dialogue.

As Ghana navigates the complexities of LGBTQ rights, it is essential to reflect on the journey thus far and consider the lessons learned. The proposed anti-LGBTQ legislation has sparked a global conversation about the intersection of culture, religion, and human rights forcing us to confront our preconceptions and biases.

One would definitely draw conclusions from other countries as Ghana does not stand alone in this quaigmah as they Ghanaian people through their house of representatives has unanimously passed bill to criminalized the acceptance of such practices. Ghana will add up a host of nations that are about to criminalize or criminalize the LGBTQ. As societies thrive on culture, religion, and human rights, the Ghanaian culture speaks volumes against a man and man or a woman and woman engaged in sexual acts. People of the three faiths, Moslems, African traditionalists and Christianity do not subscribe these acts hence the majority support for legislation against it.

That notwithstanding the international community unadulterated support for the LGBTQ community has led their strenuous efforts in relegating the anti-LGBTQ bill into the bens is hinged on the connection it has with other international that supports Ghana financially as the Ministry of Finance wrote to the presidency to asbscour in assenting to the bill.

Ghana is destined to suffer a slap in the face with this anti-LGBTQ bill if its financial independence is not accentuated on domestic revenue but support from the international financial community. only this point will Ghana be right in its metrics of legislation to criminalize the practices of LGBTQ+.
