Civil right activists, Korsi Senyo has presented a petition to the Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Ghana to halt any action on the General Legal Council’s proposed Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill, 2017 which is currently before parliament.

[ads1]“It has come to my attention that the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Ghana has received a proposal from the General Legal Council (GLC) for the amendment of the Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill, 2017.” – He said in his petition

“I also noted that the Parliament of Ghana based on the proposal has requested for Memo on the aforementioned amendment”

According to him, the contents of the proposed amendment tabled by the GLC were contained in three of the writs he filed at the Supreme Court against the General Legal Council which the case is yet to be determined.

“I, Emmanuel Korsi Senyo, a Citizen of Ghana wish to bring to the attention of the honorable Committee that the main proposals contained in the LEGAL PROFESSION (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2017 are the subject matter of a Supreme Court cases between myself and General Legal  Council with a Suit Nos. J1/20/17, J1/21/17 and J1/1/2018” – he said

Korsi Senyo, therefore, wants the lawmakers to suspend any action on the Bill until the case is determined by the apex Court.

“I, therefore, pray this honorable Committee to suspend any action of the said amendment until Supreme Court rules on the cases”.

If readers can recall, following the ban 3years imposed on the young human rights lawyer, Francis Sosu in June last year, Korsi Senyo has taken the General Legal Council on describing it as a “lawless institution” and said their actions are “illegal and affront to natural justice”. He also accused the state institution that regulates legal profession and education of engaging in “selective justice” by making the laws bite only if the lawyers involved are not their own.

He then dragged the General Legal Council to the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of some of their actions that he described as illegal, their monopoly over legal education and its composition.

He also dragged a Member of the GLC’s Disciplinary Committee, Senior Lawyer Sam Okudzeto and two other lawyers, Mr. Vincent Beyuo, lawyers for the General Legal Council and private legal practitioner Ace Ankomah to the GLC accusing them of touting and advertising.

The GLC’s Disciplinary Committee has dismissed the case in a circumstance that Korsi Senyo described as “GLC violated its own rules” in the case he brought before them.
