The National Labour Commission (NLC) has extended a hand of invitation to the mortuary workers for further deliberations on their salaries before they go ahead with their third intended strike action.

After its first two strikes over poor working conditions and salaries, the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) had threatened another similar action following the NLC’s inability to bring MOWAG and government to reach an agreement.

In February this year when MOWAG laid down its tools, the National Labour Commission (NLC) referred the matter and referred same to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

However, MOWAG said the outcome had been lame, for which reason it would want to carry out its third industrial strike action in less than 12 months.

Andrew Asamoah, the NLC Chairman, on the contrary, said his outfit could not be blamed for the stale outcome of the negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

“We met with the mortuary association and we looked into their grievances and we agreed on the first part of their emoluments and their salary levels.

“So, we called in the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the agreement was that both would go in and sort out that portion. When they had finished, then, the other demands would follow, but I don’t know what happened in the meeting.

“If they are not happy with the negotiations between the two, we expect MOWAG to come back to us so that we could find an amicable solution to the matter,” Andrew Asamoah told Citi News Monday morning.
