Kumasi Mayor suspects arson in market fires

Osei Asibey-Antwi has not ruled out the possibility of arson in the recent infernos that have battered shops in Kumasi markets.

Last Sunday night, wildfire guttered some parts of the Kumasi Asafo Market, bringing to three the destruction fire outbreak had caused to markets in the metropolis in 72 hours.

Other properties running into thousands of Ghana cedis, including over 200 shops, were reduced to debris in last Sunday night’s fire.

Albeit investigations not conclusive on the three disasters, Osei Asibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi, attributed the recent fires to some mischievous persons who were bent on causing pain to traders and the metropolis.

A Regional Security Council meeting is to be scheduled by the MCE to investigate the cause of the three different market fires, which had happened in the space of 72 hours.

Meanwhile, the MCE had warned that no trader would be permitted to rebuild their structures as the assembly had sourced for funding to commence work on a modern market with safety gadgets and spacious walkways.

Such market fires were reported in most parts of the country in 2013, and the government and all the state security agencies had to meet to find quick solutions to them.

Rodents like mice and rats and weak electrical cables, as well as shoddy electrical wiring and naked gas and fire, all as a result of human negligence, were blamed for the inferno.
