Knowing the E-Block school projects completed by Mahama

John Mahama

As the political atmosphere in Ghana hits up ahead of the December 7 general elections, many issues of national interest emerge. One of these issues has to do with achievements of the erstwhile John Mahama-led NDC government in the education sector.

For some, the erstwhile NDC government made no efforts to expand secondary school education in the country. Others too believe the NDC performed significantly well in expanding access to secondary school education across the country.

But what is the fact?

Between 2013-2016, then President Mahama and his Education Minister, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, promised to build 200 community day schools (E-blocks) in the country.

The laudable initiative began in 2014, and before the exit of the party from power in 2016, 46 of the schools were fully completed. Some became operational while others were in the process of being operationalized. The remaining 154 projects were at various stages of completion.

At the time, the project was hailed as unprecedented by many including some members of the then opposition party, New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Unfortunately, however, the projects stalled when the NPP, led by President Akufo Addo, took over the administration of the country after winning the 2016 presidential election. The 154 remaining E-blocks were left to the mercy of the weather, with most of them becoming dwelling places for criminal gangs and weed smokers.

In this article, however, Awake News chronicles all the 46 E-Block community day schools completed and operationalized by the NDC in just two years (2014-2016).
