Members and sympathizers of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ketu North Constituency have held night vigils in honor of Ambassador Modestus Yao Zebu Ahiable, former MP for the area.
The vigil was held in three of the four zones in the constituency namely; Tadzewu, Ehi, and Penyi which had their sessions on Monday, April 22. Dzodze, which is the remaining zone, will have its session on Wednesday, April 24.
During the vigils, video excerpts and photos of the late veteran politician and diplomat, were screened to a crowd of ‘mourners’, most of whom were cladded in black and red attires. A biography of the deceased which was read on the floor of Parliament by the incumbent MP for Ketu North, Hon. James Klutse Avedzi, on Friday, March 15, was also screened.
Hon. Ahiable was elected MP for Ketu North in the December 29, 1992 parliamentary elections. He served three consecutive terms before bowing out in 2005, paving the way for the incumbent, Hon. Avedzi.
In October 2009, he was appointed Ghana’s ambassador to the Republic of Benin, by President Atta Mills. He served in this capacity till January 2013, six months after the sudden demise of President Mills.
Hon. Ahiable also served the Volta Region as its Regional Minister from 1993 to 1997, under the administration of the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.
On January 21, the politician passed away after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Celestine Afi Ahiable, and eight children.
