The NDC parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Ewurabyna Aubynn has been declared MP elect for the area following a stand off at the Greater Accra Regional collation Centre.
The standoff between members of the NPP and the NDC had occurred since December 8, 2024 when the EC officials begun collating the results form all 281 polling stations.
The Ablekuma North seat has for the past twenty years being occupied by the NPP. Ewurabena’s win marks a significant shift in politics in the area.
On Monday, December 9, the EC official suspended the collation of the results after 219 polling stations were collated with indication that the process will be continued on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at 10 am.
However, the process did not continue at 10 am as planned as both parties could not come to a conclusion. They were disagreement and confusion about authenticated pink sheets for the elections.
Supporters of the NDC stormed the collation centre on Tuesday, December 10 but for military intervention and police personnel, they were returned and prevented from accessing the collation room as chaos erupted.
Meanwhile, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, Nana Akua Afriyie has vowed not to accept the declaration as she claimed she is the rightful winner of the seat.
“I have all the scanned copies and original copies of the 281 polling stations. We are not going to accept this result,” she said to the media after the declaration by the EC official.
According to the Chairman of the party in the constituency, the EC official was compelled to declare the results as he was threatened by the NDC members.
“The process as you saw it the gentleman was subjected to threats and was under duress to declare the result. We will go back to the party and decide on what to do next.
“I pray that we will be able to take a decision that will serve the interest of the nation,” he stated.
