Reports reaching AwakeNewsroom indicate that fire razed down parts of the Shama Junction market in the Shama District of the Western Region.
The incident occurred in the late hours of Wednesday, April 17, 2024, when the market was almost deserted.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that dozens of market structures and stores were damaged by the fire.
An account by an eyewitness, Fodzokupikin Lovelace, suggests that the inferno was timely put out by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) who rushed to the venue shortly after they were alerted. According to him, the quick response of the Fire Service team was what averted a possible disaster.
“The rapid response of the district Fire Service team averted what could have been another market fire disaster. The fire service team is still on the ground ensuring everything is under control,” Lovelace narrated.
Meanwhile, it is not yet known what caused the fire, as investigation into the incident has yet to be launched.
