Former President John Dramani Mahama has scared His Excellency President Nana Akuffo Addo to paying customers of the Ghanaian gold dealership and investment firm Menzgold.
The gold dealership and investment firm was closed down by the government in September 2018 as part of the government’s agenda to clean up the financial sector. The government took the decision to close down Menzgold alluding to facts that the firm was unable to pay its customers and that its operations were illegal as they took deposits over the counter in exchange of trading gold on behalf of the customers in return for dividends from gold bars that the customers never saw or took possession of.
However former President John Dramani Mahama has since September this year 2020 turn to cause a steer for his Excellency Nana Akuffo Addo as he promised to intervene in the financial sector clean up that led to a lot of Ghanaians lose their monies to majority of the institutions that were close down by government.
The Nana Akuffo Addo led government long held views that did not sit well with Ghanaians. Among such is government’s decision that they could not pay customers of the gold dealership firm and other financial institutions, It must also be noted that other financial institutions customers were paid by government this year 2020 but were paid in bonds that would allow them to get their monies fully paid in a period of five years.
However, since former President John Dramani Mahama lunch his manifesto dubbed “THE PEOPLE’S MANIFESTO” that has been described by some political scientists as the best manifesto since independence and in it, he promised to include all the financial sector institutions customers that were affected to his payment scheme has to scare the Nana Akuffo Addo government to find money and begin to pay majority of the customers. Government began this initiative by paying the customers who were given bonds as payments a month ago and the latest is the gold dealership firm Menzgold customers.
A statement that is released on Monday the 12th of October 2020 by the Ministry of Finance has indicated that the government is now committed to paying all the customers of the defunct gold dealership firm Menzgold. It said “, following a persistent petition by customers of Menzgold to the president of the Republic Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo over their locked up funds, His Excellency the President has directed the Finance Minister to meet with leaders of the customers in findings state-led solution to the problem as soon as possible,”.
The meeting will come on, on Thursday 15th of October 2020 to decide on percentage and timeliness of payments, priority shall be given to customers who never benefited from their investment, the statement further espoused.
