Former President and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has provided further clarification on his ’24-hour economy’ policy, identifying some public and private sectors that would be most suitable for the initiative.

Speaking at the launch of the NDC’s Youth Manifesto in Accra on Monday, August 12, the former President explained that the much-touted policy will introduce a shift system where three people can share one job.

He also stated that the policy is aimed at creating enough jobs, which, according to him, would accelerate economic growth.

“A 24-hour economy will enable one job to be shared across three shifts and employ three persons, providing job opportunities for three workers instead of one. This policy, which aims to drive economic growth, improve service delivery, and jobs in both the public and private sectors, will prioritize the needs of our youth,” he asserted.

In his address, Mr. Mahama listed areas such as ports and harbors, customs, DVLA services, passport services, agro-processing, manufacturing, construction, sanitation and waste management, financial institutions, retail, and tourism as some of the public and private sectors that will benefit from the policy.

On the issue of security, the former President said his next NDC government “will invest in security and public safety measures, including recruiting additional personnel and enhancing street lighting to promote nighttime economic activities.”
