John Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has disclosed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is under scrutiny for breaching legal procurement limits.

During an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints, he explained that ECG had engaged in procurement practices far beyond the permissible legal thresholds, prompting the decision to initiate a forensic audit into the company’s operations.

Jinapor revealed that a network within ECG had been functioning like a cartel, exerting influence over procurement processes.

This cartel-like operation has raised concerns about potential financial mismanagement, including the mysterious disappearance of 1,328 containers that belong to the power distributor.

The minister emphasized that the forensic audit will thoroughly investigate ECG’s procurement systems, which, according to him, began to deteriorate in 2022.

He assured the public that all individuals implicated in these irregularities would be given a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations made against them.

As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities are retrieving missing ECG containers from private companies and warehouses that are suspected of being involved in illegal transactions with ECG’s assets.

Jinapor reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring accountability and implementing reforms to prevent such procurement malpractices in the future.
