Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana’s infrastructure drive by pledging funding for the construction of a major bridge over the Volta Lake at Volivo.

During a meeting with President John Mahama on Tuesday, Miyazaki Katsura, Senior Executive Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), confirmed Japan’s interest in financing the Volivo Bridge, a critical component of Ghana’s Eastern Corridor road network.

The project is part of President Mahama’s ambitious $10 billion “Big Push” agenda, which targets annual investments of $2 billion in roads, bridges, healthcare, and education over the next five years.

“We are happy that the Volivo Bridge project is captured under the Big Push initiative,” Katsura noted. He assured the President that JICA will engage further with the Japanese government and dispatch a technical team to Ghana to evaluate the additional funding required.

The Volivo Bridge is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between the southern and northern regions by completing the Eastern Corridor Road, easing travel and trade.

President Mahama had previously secured Japan’s backing for the bridge during a visit to Tokyo in his earlier term. He has now accepted an invitation to attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in August, where discussions on final funding arrangements will continue.
