A cyclist by the name, James Kumbeni is embarking on a rather extraordinary trip to support someone breaking a Guinness World Record. The Bolgatanga-based rider, who is the Chief Peddler at Keekee Cycling Konnect, says it has always been his “dream to ride this long distance.”
Earlier this year, in January, James Kumbeni made the headlines after completing the 170km distance between Bolgatanga and Tamale. That was by far his longest-riding expedition in a career that spanned three years.
His expedition to Tamale was in support of Executive Chef Faila who was embarking on a record-breaking cook-a-thon that got the whole country on its feet. James completed the journey in solidarity to support the Chef in her attempt.
This time around, James, an MPhil student at CK. Tedam University in Navrongo is embarking on a road trip to the national capital, Accra. He said the journey will last four days and will take him through some important Ghanaian cities and towns, such as Tamale, Techiman, Kintampo, and Kumasi. His mission is to support Joel Atinga, a Ghanaian youth who is set to make a 90-hour record-breaking barbecue marathon attempt.
When asked about his motivation, James Kumbeni said, “It has always been my dream to ride this long distance. I am also motivated by this dream to embark on this trip.”
He added that apart from using the trip to encourage Joel to go harder and achieve his dream, he wants to use the trip to also create awareness about the benefits of cycling.
“As I embark on this trip, I also hope to create awareness about the need to exercise our bodies and cycling awareness,” he noted. James announced April 9, 2024, as the date he will embark on the trip. Joel is set to begin his GWR attempt on April 11 and end on April 14, 2024, at the Legon City Mall. The current record holder is Jan Greeff, originally from South Africa but based in Georgia, USA. The native South African cooked 1,000 hot dogs, 200 pieces of corn, 104 pieces of chicken, 558 hamburgers and 526 boerewors (South African sausage) in 80 hours.
