Gospel musician and Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Kofi Sarpong, has shared his thoughts on the growing conversation about collaborations between gospel and secular artistes.

During an interview on The Career Trail program on Joy Learning TV and JoyNews, he stated clearly that he is open to such collaborations.

“If the opportunity comes, I will not hesitate,” he said confidently.

He explained that music is essentially a blend of words and rhythms. These words, according to him, reflect life’s experiences, advice, and motivation. Therefore, he sees no strong reason to separate gospel from secular music.

“All these words we put together with rhythm to make music are part of our language and daily experiences. When we talk about marriage, for example, we find guidance in the Songs of Solomon. Proverbs and motivation are there too. So why should we draw a line between gospel and secular?” he quizzed.

Moreover, ACP Sarpong acknowledged the irresistible nature of some secular songs. He admitted that their catchy beats can be hard to ignore.

“Some of these secular songs, you hear the beat, and you just can’t resist,” he added with a smile.

While some view secular artists as worldly, ACP Sarpong disagrees with that mindset. Instead of judging them, he believes in reaching out and building connections.

“If we don’t go to them or get close to them, how can we help them get to where we want? Even those in the church sometimes leave because of how we perceive people,” he pointed out.

He emphasized that although he respects differing views, he avoids being judgmental. In his opinion, any collaboration that inspires and uplifts the youth is worth considering.

“If we are doing something that will especially encourage the youth and motivate others, I’ll do it,” he said.

However, he stressed that lyrics would remain a deciding factor in any collaboration. The message, he noted, must align with values that uplift and inspire.
