Former President John Mahama, the flagbearer of the NDC, has promised to prioritize youth in his cabinet if given the mandate by Ghanaians in the 2024 presidential elections. The former first gentleman of the land is seeking a final term in office.
According to him, the demographics of the country support the need for more youth involvement in government business. He noted that data from the latest census shows that the country’s population is youthful, thus the need for them to be given prominence in leadership roles.
Addressing the issue of low youth participation in top government positions, Mahama said it is time to engage more young people. The former President served as a Deputy Communications Minister and Chairman of the National Communications Authority during the time of President Rawlings. He was under 40 years old at the time when President Rawlings appointed him into office in 1997.
“One of the promises I leave you young people with is that the NDC cabinet post January 7, 2025, is going to be averagely one of the youngest cabinets in the history of this country,” Mahama stated.
According to the NDC leader, while people rely on the experience of the elderly for guidance, the numbers show that the youth deserve more representation. He said the country is full of young people, a fact that speaks to the need to use them more in government.
“If you look at the demographics of our country and you know that the majority are young people, then definitely, if you’re setting up a cabinet, young people must be the majority in that cabinet,” he added.
