The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has disclosed that President Akufo-Addo’s promise to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa will be achieved by the end of his second term in office.
Addressing the media yesterday the Minister said, “The President will go for two terms and at the end of that term, Accra would have been the cleanest city and we are on course”.
She is convinced that the sanitation goal will be realised as “God is in control and the battle is still the Lords”.
Cecilia Dapaah added the president has “put the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources on the top priority list of the government to be able to access all the budget that it needs”.
The Sanitation Minister’s statement contradicts President Akufo-Addo’s pledge he made in 2017 during his installation as Nii Kwaku Abladey Okudzeaman I by the Jamestown and the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council.
“The commitment we are making and which I want you all to make with me is that by the time we end our four-year term, Accra is going to be the cleanest city in Africa,” the President said.
Commenting on the new deadline, Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo says the Sanitation Minister’s “ignorant” statement may be a mockery of the President.
In a Facebook post, Prof. Gyampo observed that, it is possible Cecilia Abena Dapaah is unhappy with the President for reassigning her from the Aviation Ministry to the Sanitation Ministry.
“Listening to her again, I suspect she was just mocking the President in protest against her reshuffle. Else what explains this ignorance,” he stated.
