Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams has reaffirmed his choice to represent Ghana in international football. Inaki Williams switched allegiance to Ghana in 2022 despite making an appearance for the Spanish national team in 2016.
Since switching nationality, the Bilbao hitman has represented the Black Stars in two tournaments; FIFA World Cup 2022 and Africa Cup of Nations in 2024. In 17 appearances, he has scored one goal for the Black Stars.
Despite his goal shyness for the Black Stars, the Athletic Bilbao star forward said his decision to play for Ghana comes with no regrets.
“I would never have imagined this. I had to make a decision and I don’t regret being able to represent the country of my parents and my family, to go back to my origins, to be able to travel more and see my loved ones in Ghana.”
He admitted that things didn’t go as planned with the national team but on a personal level he has seen improvement.
“It’s true that things didn’t work out as we’d all hoped, but it’s true that on a sporting and personal level, it helped me a lot. In fact, I think I’m in one of my best moments thanks to this decision,” Inaki told Club del Deportista.
Inaki Williams has been a regular figure for Athletic Bilbao since breaking into the senior side in the 2014/2015 season. He has made over 400 appearances for the club and has scored more than 100 goals.
