The Technical University (HTU) is making plans to pave way for talented sportsmen and woman to gain admission into the school.

According to them, this would boost the sports department of the school and also make them competitive to the rest of their fellows at sports competitions.

This was realised after an unimpressive performance at the 2017 last edition of the Ghana Polytechnic Sports Association (GHAPSA) Games held in Bolgatanga in the Northern Region.

Speaking in an interview with Volta Region’s Premier FM, Chairman of the Sports Committee of the school Mr Vincent Asimah said the policy which would recognize sports as a crucial part of the academic process will ensure that marks and other grants will be awarded for the various sports persons.

He added that these would ensure that students with interest in sports would turn up and groomed to embrace their talents without fear of it having a negative impact on their academic performance.

He however noted that “one main challenge we do have is that, our sports policy is yet to be accepted even though it has been drafted and submitted. If we have that I believe strongly that things will take shape and students who are actually for sports would come out in their numbers to participate”.

He further mentioned that the issue of missing lectures due to sports and not making any marks, coupled with other issues are setting the school back in terms of sports development.

He therefore appealed to the university community to embrace sports and give it the needed attention as it remains a key platform in rebranding and marketing the institution.

“Going forward steps will be taken to provide for training facilities especially the pitches. The facilities will be enhanced for regular training by sports men and women.

“Sporting activities should not be an occasional program but an all year round activity so the sports men and women will be ready at any time, so that they can put up a better performance whenever they are called up on,” he noted.

Sports manageress of the university, Madam Esther Akwensievie also added her voice as she believe strongly that sports is also an academic exercise, as it helps build good attitudes and traits for the success of the various career choices of students.

She also called for support for the university community which is blessed with talented sports men and women.

Ho Technical University ended the GHAPSA games with four medals; two silver and two bronze medals.
