Women of Faith and Substance (WOFAS), a non-aligned political group, has hurled strong words at the Minority in Parliament for their hate for women.

WOFAS wondered why parliamentarians, who are to promote gender equality in all its spheres, would have the Minority doing the opposite by staging a walkout Tuesday, during the swearing in of Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the new Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon.

Lydia Alhassan was voted into office in a by-election on Thursday, January 31, this year, after the demise of Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, her husband and former MP for the constituency.

However, the by-election was characterized with some brutalities by masked armed personnel deployed by the Minister of State for National Security, Bryan Acheampong, on civilians, mainly supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, quickly called a presser to announce
the NDC’s pull-out from the exercise.

Samuel George Nartey, MP for Ningo-Prampram, was not spared hefty blows by the operatives.

Following the bloody reports from the by-election that resulted in her victory, the Minority in Parliament held that they would not recognize the new entrant, consequently, their walkout from the chamber on Tuesday.

But, WOFAS held a contrary position that prior to the election, members of the NDC attacked Lydia Alhassan on several media networks, making reference to a statement by the NDC candidate, Delali Kwasi Brempong, that “electing a woman to face him was a  ‘big’ mistake.”

WOFAS, again, quoted an unprintable utterance by Joycelyn Tetteh, NDC MP for North Dayi, at Lydia Seyram Alhassan, ahead of the by-election.

“These were precursors to what the Minority had in stock for Honourable Lydia Seyram Alhassan at her swearing-in event,” Annie Akomeah, one of the WOFAS members said.

WOFAS registered its disgust at the Minority’s description of Lydia Seyram Alhassan as a ‘BLOODY WIDOW’ because there were a few violent acts during the election which saw her elevated to the position of a Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

It, on this note, called on all women in Ghana and civil society organizations to condemn this loutish behaviour of the Minority in Parliament.
