A Criminal Court in Accra has adjourned the third retrial of Gregory Afoko, who is facing charges related to the May 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The retrial has been set for April 7, following a request from the prosecution. Afoko, who was granted bail of GHS 500,000 after spending nearly a decade on remand at Nsawam Medium Security Prison, is accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi, who is on death row, to murder Mahama in a brutal acid attack. Mahama had reportedly identified both men as his attackers before dying from his injuries.
In April 2023, a jury delivered a split verdict, convicting Asabke Alangdi of conspiracy but acquitting Afoko of murder and conspiracy charges.
The court has ordered a third retrial, pending the proper constitution of a seven-member jury. Afoko’s legal team had filed multiple bail applications, with the most recent being granted in February 2025.
The case has drawn significant attention, with Afoko having been arrested in 2015 and denied bail until recently. The trial, which began in 2019, has faced delays due to previous hung verdicts.
