In a significant development, Gregory Afoko, the embattled former brother of the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko has been granted bail after spending nearly a decade in custody.

Gregory Afoko, who was arrested in 2015, was accused of conspiring with others to kill Adams Mahama, the then Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, in a brutal acid attack.

The court set bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties, marking a major milestone in a case that has dragged on for years.

Afoko’s lawyers are expected to mount a strong defence as the trial continues.

Despite the bail ruling, the state’s prosecution will press on, seeking justice for the late Adams Mahama.

The acid attack that killed Mahama sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political landscape, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for justice.

Afoko’s arrest and subsequent detention were seen as a necessary step in ensuring that those responsible for the heinous crime were held accountable.

However, Afoko’s prolonged detention without trial had raised concerns about the country’s justice system and the rights of accused persons.

The granting of bail is seen as a welcome development, as it allows Afoko to prepare his defense while awaiting trial.
